This is the Colt M16A2/M16A4 Forward Assist Assy: Round, Small (Type 3). Current Production
The early Colt M16A2 rifles used a Forward Assist Assy which will only work with the M16A1 lower receiver forgings: Large, Round (Type 1).
Most 1980s production M16A2 rifles used a Forward Assist Assy which was modified with an inside clearance cut to work with the reinforced M16A2 lower receiver forgings: Large, Partial-Round (Type 2).
